alabama association of school nurses

About Us

health & education

Our History

On April 30, 1970 school nurses attended a workshop, “The Nurse and the School Child” at the University of Alabama. The organization then called the Alabama School Nurses Association was officially organized on May 26, 1970, in Birmingham. Then, on March 15, 1972, the name was changed to the Department of School Nurses under the Alabama Education Association. Later, the name was changed once again to become the Alabama Association of School Nurses (AASN) to avoid confusion with the Alabama State Nurses Association (ASNA). In 2006, the AASN became incorporated as a non-profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the federal tax code.
